People that want to play Smash (or any game competitively) will seek it out themselves. If you have to convince them to get good, you're wasting your time. Sure it's a good idea to get word out that there is a competitive scene, but to get them to actually join and play with people and WANT to get better is completely up to them.
For me, I jumped onto the competitive scene when someone told me of the greatest Marth player in the world, Ken. I began to look up his videos and said to myself, "I want to play like that." So basically I'm tossing the classic phrase out there; "You can bring a horse to water, but you can't make him drink."
And a weekly or biweekly that far away is going to turn away new people to the competitive scene. It's not like Chaska is 5 minutes away, and a lot of people, like many on this board, can't drive or own a car. That's almost asking too much of someone who would be new to the scene. Driving far to get beat by people sounds intimidating even to me, but I know that I'll get better from doing it, so, to me, it's worth the sacrafice, but again, it'd be nearly impossible to convince a new guy to get a ride, put in time, and strive to get better unless they want it themselves.
BTW. This is a rare post of me actually being serious about something.

I think I was the last one to join PLS? (As of now)
I was always wanting to do a smash scene and was willing but most places were extremely far away (St. Paul or OoS) which is unacceptable to my parents.
Savage is 30 minutes away and I was prepared to go every darn Friday as long as I could till I got noticed and better opportunities started approaching.
Personally, I think I succeeded, but obviously I gotta do more.
Just saying guys. Mac is right, but don't think you're not going to find people willing to go out of their way to go to a good tournament, or weekly. I most certainly am.

We could carpool/caravan it up.
And I'm not saying force people to join us, I'm just saying that if you know of people who are interested, why not show them the tools available? Also getting word out would just show people that there is the option to have fun and get better.
lol at my words being taken too literally when people know what I'm generally talking about. I'm no wordsmith as my last couple posts have shown XD
