It's a very simple technique.
When your charging anything, a punch, a laser, a big ball of doom, etc.
When you feel like you are in danger. Hit your shield button to cancel. Defend yourself, attack, etc etc. When you charge again. The charge will continue where you have left off from the previous charge.

Some Shield Cancels do have lag.
I noticed this with DK when I was trying to shield cancel to block an attack from Donos05 when we played some friendlies today.

Ah. I see. Not the most efficent way of doing things.
Well ROB has a almost lagless turning cancel which is nice for unexpectedness. yes.
